JULY 13, 2000 Stan Jones, chairman of the Tulalip Tribes of Washington, says their casino is a "godsend." Their casino, which opened in 1992, has helped the tribe and tribal members achieve financial independence and reduced the welfare rate from 60 percent to 20 percent. The tribe is now able to offer additional programs and services including a Boys and Girls Club, an activity center and waterfront apartments for elders, a Montessori pre-school, guaranteed funds for college, and health care. Casino money has also helped the tribe buy back land on its own reservation. The tribe now owns more than half of the 22,086-acre reservation.
