JUNE 23, 2000 A bill that would have given more scrutiny to off-reservation casinos was essentially dropped by the New York State Assembly, who indefinitely tabled the bill on Thursday. The bill was supported by Donald Trump, who opposes a casino in the Catskills, believing it would compete with his casinos in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The bill had quickly passed the Senate. The St Regis Mohawk received federal approval for a casino in the Catskills in April, but soon changed partners, leaving up for question its new proposal with Park Place Entertainment, the largest gaming company in the world. Upon hearing of the Assembly's actions, Park Place said federal approval for the plan would come quickly. It took three years for the Mohawk to receive approval. Get the Story:
