FROM THE ARCHIVE
SEPTEMBER 22, 2000 Jeff Benedict, author of the controversial book Without Reservation, says he has a membership list of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and that it supports his claims that the tribe has no connection to the historical Pequot tribe. Benedict said he obtained the list from an unidentified tribal member. He also said other documents were given to him. Bendict also continues to question historic Connecticut documents which show that ancestors of the current tribal membership were members of the Pequot tribe. He questions if any older documents establish those ancestors as members of the tribe. In discussing the recognition petitions of two Eastern Pequot tribes in the state, researchers at the BIA said they rely on court documents and decisions like the ones possessed by the Mashantucket to establish descendancy from a historic tribe. Petitioners have to show that they descend from those ancestors and do not necessarily have to document their genealogy farther back. Get the Story:
