AUGUST 24, 2000

Sister Diana M. Smith, 44, and Doreen A. Begay, 42, have been charged with stealing more than $200,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National School Lunch Program.

The money was intended to go to the Kaibeto Boarding School on the Navajo reservation in Arizona.

The sisters, who worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, are alleged to have used the money for personal use. The indictment states the sisters may have used the money to gamble.
