AUGUST 23, 2000

The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of Montana have contracted former Missoula County Attorney Robert "Dusty" Deschamps to head up their prosecution office.

Deschamps has been acting as head of the office since May and just signed a one-year contract which begins in August. The office has jurisdiction over misdemeanor cases involving Indians on the tribes' Flathead Reservation and handles some felony cases where Indians are the accused.

Deschamps ran and lost for the state's House of Representatives seat in 1998. William Yellowtail, a member of the Crow Tribe of Montana, was just suspended on Tuesday for 100 days from his post as Regional Administrator at the Environmental Protection Agency for allegedly endorsing a letter calling for contributions to Deschamps' campaign.
