JULY 19, 2000 The city of Sherrill is suing Oneida Nation representative Ray Halbritter because they say tribe owes them at least $10,000 in taxes. The city filed suit against Halbritter in US District Court in Syracuse, New York. The city says the tribe should be barred from buying land or expanding its buildings until they agree to pay taxes on it. The Oneida Nation says they don't have to pay taxes on land that the state illegaly stole. The Oneida Nation has an ongoing land claims lawsuit against the counties of Madison and Oneida. But the suit only names Halbritter because the city's lawyers don't want the tribe to assert sovereign immunity. Get the Story:
