JULY 11, 2000 Senator Christopher Dodd (D-Conn) has asked the Department of Interior to delay a final ruling on the federal recognition of the Eastern Pequot and Paucatuck Eastern Pequot tribes of Connecticut, citing a memo obtained by the Hartford Courant. Dodd says the memo raises problems in the federal recognition process. The Hartford Courant report claims the memo shows that Kevin Gover ignored the findings of the Bureau of Acknowledgement and Research, the BIA group which researches and makes recommendations on federal recognition petitions. Gover issued a preliminary finding in favor of recognition for the tribes in late March. The newspaper quotes Kay Davis, a former BAR staff member, who states that "Until Kevin Gover, nobody went against BAR." Dodd says he will meet with Senator Joseph I. Lieberman (D-Conn) and Representative Sam Gejdenson (D-Conn) to discuss the issue. A final ruling on the two tribes is expected in late September. Get the Story:
