Pequot probe requested

JUNE 8, 2000

Bowing to local pressure, Representative Sam Gejdenson has requested a congressional probe of the 1983 Mashantucket Pequot Settlement Act in a letter to the House Committee on Resources.

Gejdenson had met with the leaders of three Connecticut towns who oppose the expansion of the Mashantucket reservation and the federal recognition of the Eastern Pequot and Paucatuck Eastern Pequot tribes. After the Friday meeting, the leaders of Ledyard, North Stonington, and Preston had criticized the Senator for paying "lip service" to them.
