JUNE 8, 2000 Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal wants a ban on the BIA, barring them from recognizing tribes. Citing Kevin Gover's recent testimony supporting Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell's bill to remove the duty of recognizing tribes away from the BIA, as well as other comments made by Gover, Blumenthal plans to ask attorney generals from across the nation to support him during the upcoming National Association for Attorneys General meeting. Blumenthal made his request in a letter to Bruce Babbitt, Secretary of Interior. Copies were sent to Senator Campbell (R Colo) and Senator Daniel Inouye (D Hawaii), the chairmen of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. Spokesmen for the two said they oppose Blumenthal's proposal. Get the Story:
