FROM THE ARCHIVE
JULY 14, 2000 The Great Council of Chiefs, the traditional leadership of Fiji, chose two leaders this week for the new government of the island nation. Ratu Josefa Iloilo was named President and Ratu Jope Seniloli was named Vice-President. George Speight, the indigenous businessmen who launched a coup against a government dominated by ethnic Indians on May 19, ended the standoff and released the remaining hostages on Thursday. In late May, Speight had rejected a plan by the chiefs that called for releasing the hostages, instituting a new government, and implementing a constitution giving more power to indigenous Fijians. This plan will effectively now take place. The 40-member council currently have little governing power but great respect over the country that was once ruled by a traditional Native government.
