JULY 28, 2000 A plan to store nuclear waste on the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation in Utah came under fire Thursday night at a public hearing where most of the audience opposed the idea. Govenor Mike Leavitt spoke against the plan at the meeting held by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) as did Senatory Scott Howell. Howell said the tribe might be offered $114 million from the state's budget surplus in exchange for not going ahead with their plan. Goshute Chairman Leon Bear said his tribe is desparate for economic development. One person besdies him who spoke at the meeting supported the plan. The plant on the reservation would hold up to 40,000 tons of spent fuel from power plants all throughout the country. The tribe has already signed a lease agreement with Private Fuel Storage, a company representing eight electric utilities. Get the Story:
