FROM THE ARCHIVE
DECEMBER 7, 2000 Citing threats from a cancer-causing chemical to their water supply, the Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho has decided to support the designation of a log yard as a Superfund site. The site contains creosote, which was used to treat logs. Creosote has been showing up on the banks of the St. Joe and in the water since 1998. The Superfund designation targets the yard for cleanup using federal money. The EPA is seeking public comments about the proposal until the end of January.
