EDITORIAL: Indian education

An editorial in today's Omaha World-Herald says a proposal to increase funding of aid to schools on Nebraska reservations can help some of the problems they face.

Last year, the paper published a series of articles about education on the state's reservations. Problems of truancy, test scores, and drop out rates were highlighted. The paper helped draw the attention of tribal and state leaders to the problems.

The paper says schools shouldn't have a problem coming up with a plan to use the $6 million in aid. The money would come from counting Indian students as 2.25 students, whereas now they count as 1.25.

A comment on the paper's web site says the tribe itself needs proper facilities and qualified staff to help the schools or the problems will continue despite the cash infusion.
