Military official says Piestewa fought with courage

TUESDAY, MAY 27, 2003

A military official said Lori Piestewa, the Hopi woman killed in action in Iraq, fought her Iraqi attackers "with courage and honor," The Arizona Republic reports.

Shirley Martinez, deputy assistant Air Force secretary for equal opportunity, spoke at one of two ceremonies held at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. The first ceremony marked the opening of an exhibit dedicated to Native women who have served in the armed forces. The second was a general service for women veterans.

A report into the circumstances of Piestewa's March 23 death has been completed by the military and is expected to be released mid-June.
