Yellow Bird: Include Natives in plan
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2002 "The proposed collegiate hockey Hall of Fame, automobile museum, agricultural museum and national collegiate aviation Hall of Fame at the Alerus Center seem to be too many in the same theme - perhaps overkill. Don't get me wrong. I like the proposal to build a super Alerus entertainment complex. It is a vision of an exciting, growing community. If you are going to do museums, why not give Easterners or others who come a long way from the hubbub of the big cities a taste of the Old West with a Native American historical museum? We, after all, have the Red Lake Chippewa and White Earth Anishinaabeg of Minnesota, the Sisseton Dakota in South Dakota; the Spirit Lake Dakota and the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa in North Dakota in our back yard. But let this museum sell foods such as fried bread and hominy soup, juneberry puddings, canned or dried juneberries, chokecherry jelly, lessons on Native dance or short videos of Native American history."
