First Peoples Fund opens applications for grants and fellowship programs

The First Peoples Fund is accepting applications for grants and fellowship programs that support Native artists.

Applications for the Native Performing Arts Fellowship are due September 23. The program provides $10,000 to Native artists work within the performing arts, including music, dance and theater.

“This Fellowship aims to support Native performing artists in refining their craft and expanding their knowledge,” President and CEO of First Peoples Fund Justin Kii Huenemann, a citizen of the Navajo Nation, said an August 13 announcement.

The fellowship is part of the Native Performing Arts Program, an initiative at First Peoples Fund that includes the Native Performing Arts Production Grant. Applications are due September 23 for the to provide $30,000 for Native-led performing arts productions that include multiple Native performers and artists.

“Productions can include: theatrical plays, Indigenous fashion shows, touring for Native performance groups, performances in Native communities, and other forms of live performance that may not fit into conventional performance categories,” Huenemann said in an August 27 announcement.

In addition, First Peoples Fund is accepting applications on the 10th day of every month for the Yéigo Action Grant, whose name comes from the Navajo language phrase for “keep going” or “don’t give up.” Awards between $100 and $5,000 will be offered to Native artists and culture bearers who need financial assistance.

“This grant provides crucial financial support for professional development opportunities or to help overcome any challenges that may stand in the way of creative expression,” Huenemann said in an August 20 announcement.

Huenemann began his leadership role at First Peoples Fund in March. He succeeds Lori Lea Pourier, a citizen of the Oglala Sioux Tribe who served as president of the organization since 1993. Pourier’s new title is “Founder and Senior Fellow.”
