The House Committee on Education and the Workforce considers H.R.7227, the Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies Act, at a markup session on June 13, 2024.
The bipartisan bill establishes a national commission to formally investigate, document, and report on the impacts of Indian boarding school era. The measure boasts more than 60 supporters — Democrats and Republicans alike.
Following discussion at the markup, an amendment in the nature of a substitute to H.R.7227 was approved by a vote of 34-4. All of the “No” votes came from four Republicans, according to the committee’s roll call.
The bill can now be send to the full U.S. House of Representatives for consideration.
