Cherokee Nation’s Journey Toward Autism Inclusivity
Monday, May 6, 2024
Cherokee Nation
Autism is a term covering many different ways of being human. In the modern world, we are just beginning to understand this complex syndrome and how to best support our friends and family members on the autism spectrum.
Still, no matter what challenges and potentials our fellow community members bring, everyone deserves to feel valued, understood and accepted. As we take this journey together, let’s remember to listen, learn and celebrate the beauty of our differences.
First Lady January Hoskin and I are proud to stand alongside the dedicated members of the Cherokee Nation Autism Task Force as we improve support for individuals with autism and their families across the reservation. This is deeply personal for us, as we have beautiful grandchildren who navigate the world with autism. Their unique perspectives and experiences have inspired me to learn more about autism and enact meaningful change.

Chuck Hoskin Jr.
is the 18th elected Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, the largest Indian
tribe in the United States. He is only the second elected Principal Chief of the
Cherokee Nation from Vinita, the first being Thomas Buffington, who served from
1899-1903. Prior to being elected Principal Chief, Hoskin served as the tribe’s
Secretary of State. He also formerly served as a member of the Council of the
Cherokee Nation, representing District 11 for six years.
