As part of every Governmental Accounting Standards Advisory Council (GASAC) meeting, GASAC members have the opportunity to raise any issues in practice that may require the attention of the Board. The GASB’s success is determined in part on its ability to address accounting and financial reporting issues on a timely basis, and the GASAC members play an important role in identifying those issues.

The United States Treasury announced a new round of approvals for tribal support under the State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI), a 2010 program aimed at helping open new avenues to credit by supporting funding institutions.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced $105 million in new SSBCI funding via a video address this morning at the 2024 Reservation Economic Summit (RES) in Las Vegas. The funding round, the third announced by the Treasury over the past nine months, brings the total number of SSBCI-support tribes to 80 and the total amount awarded to $265 million.

Such investments are crucial in Indian Country, where nearly 46% of people in Native-majority census tracts live in banking deserts — more than 12 times the national average, Yellen said.

The Controller oversees the accounting and financial reporting functions of the organization and should have a strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting, as well as current GASB statements. The Controller is responsible for the integrity and completeness of the financial statements, ensuring that the individual financial transactions are timely and accurately entered.

The Controller is part of the Financial Services Division of the primary government.

This position serves under the direction of the Executive Financial Director of the Financial Services Division. It requires the ability to interface with various members of the Division, tribal leadership, the accounting team, and all operational divisions of the primary government. Individuals must possess the ability to work and maintain highest degree of confidentiality due to the sensitive nature of the work.
