NAFOA and the U.S. Department of the Treasury are partnering for a webinar to present essential information about pre-filing registration for applicable entities and eligible taxpayers to take advantage of elective payment or transfer of credits available in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) and Science Act.

With introductions from Treasurer Malerba, Treasury officials Krishna Vallabhaneni and Rachel McCleery will cover what tribes and energy developers need to know. After the presentation, there will be time for audience questions to address any inquiries about the new portal.

NAFOA’s 42nd Annual Conference, held April 29-30, 2024, at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, will offer you the opportunity to attend educational sessions focused specifically on growing your tribe’s economy and give you the chance to visit and explore the land of the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

NAFOA’s conference room block is sold out on Saturday night. Rooms are available, but the rate is $472 per night. Attendees can still reserve at the reduced group rate from Sunday through Wednesday.

Spots are still available for tribal leaders and finance professionals for the Leading People and Investing to Build Sustainable Communities (LPIBSC) program. NAFOA welcomes applications from tribal leaders and finance professionals, including chief financial officers, executive officers, senior financial managers, and senior accounting staff with experience working in or with a tribal nation or Native organization.

The final application deadline is Friday, March 1, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. Alaska Standard Time.

Although scholarships are no longer available, the program provides invaluable insights to enhance your leadership in tribal finance.

In a significant effort to advocate for the economic interests of Indian Country, members of the NAFOA Board of Directors recently visited congressional offices in Washington, D.C. In attendance were NAFOA 1st Vice President VaRene Martin (Thlopthlocco Tribal Town, Mvskoke (Creek) Nation), Board Secretary Melanie Benjamin, Chief Executive of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, Board Treasurer Amy Minniear, who also serves as Treasurer of the Pechanga Band of Indians, along with Interim Executive Susan Masten (Yurok Tribe).

Engaging directly with several House and Senate offices, they emphasized the crucial need for fiscal policies aligned with the unique needs of tribal nations. During meetings with the Democratic and Republican staff of the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Indian & Insular Affairs, NAFOA discussed potential economic development opportunities necessary for Indian Country. The conversations also covered general and tribal tax legislative proposals and upcoming legislation from the 118th Congress that could significantly impact tribal governments and their members.

The Director of Finance is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of finances and accounting operations of Lac Vieux Desert Northern Waters Casino Resort and other enterprises under the control of the Lac Vieux Desert Public Enterprise and Finance Commission (“Tribal Enterprise”).

This position will oversee the preparation of and the analysis of financial statements, including the coordination and execution of financial related activities to ensure proper financial reporting. This position will be responsible for establishing and enforcing proper accounting methods, policies and principles for the Tribal Enterprise.
