Last week, the Department of the Treasury announced a 2-week extension for tribal governments to submit their requests for payments from the $20 billion tribal portion of the State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund. The deadline to request the first payment is TODAY, Monday, June 7, 2021 at 11:59 pm PST.

Treasury estimates it will take 4-5 days to process each submission, after which they will reach out to the point of contact with the allocation amount the tribe will receive and an anticipated date for the funds to be transferred.

To receive the second payment, Treasury will reach out to the designated point of contact asking this person to reenter the Submission Portal and confirm or amend the tribe’s 2019 employment numbers that they already submitted to Treasury following the passage of the CARES Act.

On Friday, May 28, 2021 President Biden submitted his Budget Request for Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 to Congress. The request included $2.7 billion for the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and $1.3 billion in funding for the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). These requests are $609.9 million and $110.6 million over the FY 2021 enacted levels respectively.

For the BIA, the goals of the budget request include: empowering tribal communities, strengthening tribes’ climate resilience, improving the quality of life in tribal communities, creating economic opportunities for tribal governments, increasing focus on tribes’ environmental needs, securing long-promised water resources to tribes, and promoting equity and diversity.

For the BIE, the goals of the budget request include: Increasing funding for the Indian School Equalization Program and early childhood funding, improving access to education IT, expanding scholarships and adult education opportunities, improving diversity and equity practices, and prioritizing education construction.

As a member of the team, you will be responsible for providing technical and analytical services to the ITG program, including enforcement and voluntary compliance support and outreach activities.
