1. POLICY:
FISCAL RECOVERY FUND FIRST DEADLINE TODAY, JUNE 7
Last week, the Department of the Treasury announced a 2-week extension for tribal governments to submit their requests for payments from the $20 billion tribal portion of the State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund. The deadline to request the first payment is TODAY, Monday, June 7, 2021 at 11:59 pm PST.
Treasury estimates it will take 4-5 days to process each submission, after which they will reach out to the point of contact with the allocation amount the tribe will receive and an anticipated date for the funds to be transferred.
To receive the second payment, Treasury will reach out to the designated point of contact asking this person to reenter the Submission Portal and confirm or amend the tribe’s 2019 employment numbers that they already submitted to Treasury following the passage of the CARES Act.

2. MORE POLICY:
PRESIDENT BIDEN RELEASES FY2022 BUDGET
On Friday, May 28, 2021 President Biden submitted his Budget Request for Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 to Congress. The request included $2.7 billion for the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and $1.3 billion in funding for the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). These requests are $609.9 million and $110.6 million over the FY 2021 enacted levels respectively.
For the BIA, the goals of the budget request include: empowering tribal communities, strengthening tribes’ climate resilience, improving the quality of life in tribal communities, creating economic opportunities for tribal governments, increasing focus on tribes’ environmental needs, securing long-promised water resources to tribes, and promoting equity and diversity.
For the BIE, the goals of the budget request include: Increasing funding for the Indian School Equalization Program and early childhood funding, improving access to education IT, expanding scholarships and adult education opportunities, improving diversity and equity practices, and prioritizing education construction.

NAFOA is seeking an Executive Director to lead our mission of growing tribal economies and strengthening tribal finance.
The Executive Director serves as chief executive officer of the organization and is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs, and strategic plan of the organization. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors.

IRS TAX EXEMPT AND GOVERNMENT ENTITIES IS SEEKING A SENIOR TAX LAW SPECIALIST
IRS Tax Exempt and Government Entities (TE/GE) is seeking to hire a senior tax law specialist for its Washington, D.C., Office of Indian Tribal Governments (ITG). The application closing date is June 11, 2021.
As a member of the team, you will be responsible for providing technical and analytical services to the ITG program, including enforcement and voluntary compliance support and outreach activities. The job duties for the position include preparing technical responses to the most complex inquiries submitted by IRS employees, members of Congress, Indian Tribal Governments, taxpayers, authorized representatives, government agencies, and other external and internal customers. The position involves networking and relationship building to develop and maintain effective liaisons with internal and external customers, including adherence to proper protocols in working with tribes.

5. INTERNSHIPS:
NAFOA IS SEEKING A MEDIA COORDINATOR AND JUNIOR DEVELOPER
NAFOA is seeking a Junior Developer interested in joining a team developing modern solutions for a rapidly growing non-profit dedicated to advancing tribal economies. The ideal candidate will be a creative problem solver and have some experience in coding and web development.
Our team is also seeking a Media Coordinator intern to assist in NAFOA’s media initiatives and communications. The Media Coordinator Intern will be responsible for assisting in content creation across NAFOA’s digital platforms, including website, email marketing, and social media. This includes copywriting, proofreading, and creating visual content for the organization. They will also provide support in organizing, cataloging, and archiving the organization’s media assets across departments, and support organization efforts to improve digital accessibility.
