Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Tara Sweeney addresses the Alaska Federation of Natives on October 15, 2020.

Sweeney is a citizen of the Native Village of Barrow Traditional Iñupiat Government and of the Iñupiat Community of the Arctic Slope. She is the first Alaska Native and the second woman to serve as Assistant Secretary, a political position at the Department of the Interior.

"This year's theme, 'Good Government, Alaskans Decide,' is one I strongly identify with as Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs," Sweeney said in her video address.

Sweeney is a former co-chair of the Alaska Federation of Natives, the largest Native organization in the state.
