A
mountain in Nevada named after a Confederate leader could soon be known as "Doso Doyabi" in the Shoshone language.
The
Nevada State Board on Geographic Names voted unanimously on Tuesday to support the tribal designation, according to news reports. The phrase means "White Mountain" -- chosen because the peak usually has snow on it.
"It honors our cultural heritage, for the places that had names before they were renamed," the elders committee of the
Duckwater Shoshone Tribe said in a statement of support, The Reno Gazette-Journal reported.
The
Yomba Shoshone Tribe, the
Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe and the
Reno-Sparks Indian Colony also supported the name change, the paper said.
The mountain, the third tallest in Nevada, is currently named for
Jefferson Davis, who served as the only president of Confederate States. He has no known connections to Nevada.
The state's decision will be forwarded to the
U.S. Board on Geographic Names for final approval.
The federal board usually accepts such recommendations.
The mountain is located in Great Basin National Park, near the Nevada border with Utah.
