The
Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs are closing the
Kah-Nee-Ta Resort and Spa following failed efforts to save the storied facility on the reservation in Oregon.
Several options, including eco-tourism and film development, for keeping Kah-Nee-Ta open were presented to the tribal council. But none gained enough support to move forward, according to a press release.
“It is irresponsible to continue pouring money into an enterprise that has demonstrated over many years that it cannot generate enough revenue to cover expenses,” council member Carina Miller said at a meeting on Tuesday, a
press release stated.
The council approved the closure of the facility on September 5. But leaders are open to considering additional options for the property.
The Kah-Nee-Ta Resort was initially opened by a non-Indian doctor but was purchased by the tribe in 1961,
according to Wikipedia. It features a hotel, spa, pool, cottages, water park and recreational vehicle park.
Gaming was once offered there but the tribe moved operations to the
Indian Head Casino at
a different location.
