The National Museum of the American Indian has been traveling across Indian Country, seeking input about a memorial to Native veterans. The memorial, estimated to cost $15 million, will be located on the grounds of the museum on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2018 and it could be completed in time for Veterans Day in 2020, The Tulsa World reported. “Per capita, Native Americans have served in the military in larger numbers than any other group,” NMAI Director Kevin Gover said at a consultation hosted by the Cherokee Nation in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Thursday, the paper reported. “The problem is, not very many Americans know that.” Congress authorized the memorial through H.R.2319, the Native American Veterans' Memorial Amendments Act of 2013. NMAI, with the help of people like former Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colorado), a member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, has been raising funds for the project. Get the Story:
