The Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma kicks off its 144th annual powwow on Friday evening.

The four-day event includes adult, teen and junior dance contests. Attendees can also enjoy food, arts and crafts and other vendors and, for the first time, watch a fireworks display on Sunday evening.

"We’ve kicked the idea around for a couple of years and never really got to act on it and this year we were able to pull the trigger on it,” powwow committee chairman Mike Shawnee told The Miami News-Record. “We hope to expand it next year if it goes over well."
