Democracy Now!: "Trump is a Mercenary": Native Writer Gyasi Ross on GOP Debate & Why He's Not Endorsed Anyone (Yet)
Author and attorney Gyasi Ross appeared on the Democracy Now! on Friday to discuss the 2016 presidential election. At this point, only Democrats Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have released an Indian platform. But Ross said none of the candidates, Republican or Democrat, should take the Native vote for granted. "Native people have been very clear that we want specific policy positions, promises and pledges on behalf of any of these candidates who are going to earn our vote," Ross said on the show.

Ross credited the Republicans for having a more diverse field of candidates but said the party as a whole has not welcomed minority voices. He also believes real estate mogul Donald Trump would not care about tribal interests if he won the election. "I don’t believe that he’s necessarily expressed his racist tendencies, that he does genuinely have, in relationship to Native people; however, I do feel that he will throw us under the bus very quickly in exchange for some dollars," Ross said.
