The Moapa Band of Paiute Indians will receive $4.3 million from an energy company that operates a coal-fired power plant next to the reservation. A federal judge approved the settlement on Wednesday, Courthouse News Service reported. NV Energy will shut down the Reid Gardner Generating Station by the end of 2017 as part of the agreement. Tribal members have suffered from asthma, respiratory illnesses and other health problems that they attribute to pollution from the power plant. The facility spewed coal ash into the air for decades.
