Board moves forward with landfill opposed by Moapa Band

The Southern Nevada Health District is moving forward with a permit to expand a landfill at a power plant next to the reservation of the Moapa Band of Paiute Indians.

The district's board approved the permit last October. The tribe tried to get the board to change its mind, citing pollution from the facility.

"To take this away from our culture would be a disgrace to our people," Chairman William Anderson told the board, The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

NV Energy operates the power plant.
