Phyllis Anderson was sworn into office for a second term as chief of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. Anderson, who is the first woman to lead the tribe, defeated Beasley Denson, a former chief, with 52 percent of the vote in a June 30 election. Several tribal members, including Denson, filed challenges but the election board dismissed them all. The process isn't over, however. Anyone can file a timely appeal that will be heard by the council, which is headed by Anderson. For now, Anderson is celebrating her win. She will serve another four years in office. "Today is a special day for our Tribe and I am so proud to share it with all our Choctaw people," Anderson said, according to news reports. "I am filled with gratitude for the support and trust my fellow Choctaws have given me. Our tribe is moving forward because of the optimism and positivity of our tribal members." Seven council members also took the oath of office yesterday. Ronnie Henry will serve as vice chief, Stella Willis as secretary/treasurer and Richard Isaac as committee system coordinator, The Neshoba Democrat reported. Get the Story:
