Candidate for Mississippi Choctaw chief challenges incumbent

Kevin Edwards wants to take the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians in a new direction if he is elected to lead the tribe.

Edwards, who sits on the tribal council, says the tribe is worse off than it was four years ago. He blames the situation on Miko Beasley Denson, the incumbent chief.

"People are scared to get out and talk right now, because they're afraid they're going to get fired. The present chief has made an example out of another candidate that said that he was going to run for chief and as soon as his announcement came out he had him fired and it wasn't so much that he had him fired, he eliminated his position," Edwards told WLBT-TV.

The election for chief takes place June 14.
