A non-Indian man was sentenced to one year in federal prison for assaulting a woman from the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana.

Durgan Joseph Burleigh, 34, was indicted in February for attacking the woman in January. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, he knocked the victim to the ground and continued to punch and kick her, resulting in her nose being broken.

Burleigh was due to go to trial next week. He instead pleaded guilty to one count of assault and was quickly sentenced by Judge Richard T. Haik.
