The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska is working to keep the Ho-Chunk language alive. Only about 10 fluent speakers live on the reservation, according to Lewis St. Cyr, the tribe's language program director. He's hoping to increase that number by hiring more staff, developing immersion courses and harnessing new technologies like mobile device applications. “We have a lot of people who can understand it; it’s just that bringing them out to speak it,” St. Cyr told The Norfolk Daily News. “That’s another thing that we’re trying to focus on.” The language is also spoken by members of the Ho-Chunk Nation in Wisconsin.
