A student at Western Washington University was arrested in connection with online threats that were directed at African American, Native American and other minority students.

Tysen Campbell, 19, allegedly posted messages on the Yik Yak social media app that included a comment about a student leader who is African American. He also allegedly complained about Native and other minority students because he was reportedly bothered by controversy over the university's "Vikings" mascot.

In reference to Associated Students President Belina Seare, Campbell allegedly posted a message that stated "Let's lynch her," according to WWU President Bruce Shepard. Campbell also allegedly talked about the mascot but the comments made about Native Americans have not been reported.

Campbell has been suspended and barred from campus pending resolution of the case. He has not been formally charged but is being investigated for first-degree malicious harassment under the state's hate crimes law.

The school canceled classes on November 24, right before the Thanksgiving holiday, after the messages were posted and most students returned to campus on Monday, the Associated Press reported.

Western Washington University is located in Bellingham, home to the Lummi Nation and the Nooksack Tribe.
