A First Nation in British Columbia is reeling after an attack at the tribal office left 11 people injured and the suspect dead.

According to news reports, a man went to the office of the Bridge River Band -- also known as the Xwísten First Nation -- on Wednesday morning and attacked a staff member with a hammer. Other employees were injured went they tried to help the first victim.

The alleged attacked was subdued by staffers while they awaited the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He died shortly after officers arrived on the scene, according to news reports.

"Everyone's still in shock," Chief Susan James told CBC News. "We're a large family here. These people have worked together for years."

Five people remain hospitalized, with two in critical condition and two in serious condition, The Canadian Press reported. Others who were injured in the attack were treated and released by Wednesday night, the CP said.

The Bridge River Band is located near the town of Lillooet, about 150 north of Vancouver.
