Sometimes love isn’t enough
Wounds only kindness can heal

My friend and colleague Ernestine Chasing Hawk grew up in an iyeska environment similar to my own, and she boiled what was missing in our world down to a single word—kindness.

Understanding the difference between kindness and love is critical to how we live our life. I decided decades ago that love is what is missing in the Lakota world. Neither of my parents ever told me that they loved me. I didn’t realize that until I was in my thirties. To defuse the Angry Me created by that reality, I vowed to tell all the people I loved that I love them, vowed to give them the attention and understanding I never received as a child.

I kept that vow. But it isn’t enough.
