Julianne Vanderhoop, a member of the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts, runs a unique bakery on her ancestral homeland. Vanderhoop opened the Orange Peel Bakery in August 2008. It was an immediate success -- she was easily selling out of breads, pastries, pies and other items she made every day in an outdoor oven, The Edible Vineyard reported a few months after her debut. Vanderhoop continues to see success as one of the few year-round food businesses in Aquinnah, the headquarters of her tribe. She relies on a pay-as-you-go honor system for transactions and started a popular twice-weekly pizza night, The New York Times Magazine reported.

“I love what I do,” Vanderhoop told the magazine, which published her recipe for raspberry bars with an almond crust. The tribe is based on the island of Martha's Vineyard. Get the Story:
