The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians is moving forward with plans for a 74-unit housing development in Michigan.

The project will be located on 57 acres in Hartford Township. A land-into-trust application will be filed with the Bureau of Indian Affairs at some point in the future, The St. Joseph Herald-Palladium reported.

Separately, the tribe is building a new police station. Special permits were approved for both projects by the township's planning commission because the properties aren't currently in trust, the paper said.

The tribe gained federal recognition through an act of Congress in 1994. The law authorizes the BIA to place land in trust in certain counties in Michigan and Indiana.
