The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs Reservation in Oregon adopted an Indian preference policy last week as part of a tribal employment rights ordinance.

The policy gives preference to tribal members and other Native Americans, The Bend Bulletin reports. It is expected to come into play in projects carried out by the state Department of Transportation.

“This is going to be fantastic for us,” tribal council member Carlos Smith told the paper. “It’ll provide jobs for our construction company and for tribal members looking for work on and off the reservation.”

The new ordinance creates a preference for tribally-owned and Native-owned businesses for construction projects on the reservation. The tribe will be creating a Tribal Employment Rights Office to implement the law.
