Indian lawmaker in Kansas sworn into office in traditional wear

Kansas Rep. Ponka-We Victors (D) was sworn into office on Monday.

Victors is a member of the Tohono O'odham Nation and the Ponca Tribe. She represented her Indian heritage by wearing a traditional dress and blanket as she took the oath of office.

“We’re supposed to wear our best, and this is my best,” Victors told The Wichita Eagle.

Victors is serving her third term as District 103 representative. She is the only Indian lawmaker in Kansas.
