Alaska Native leaders will be on Capitol Hill tomorrow to testify at a hearing on a subsistence bill. The House Subcommittee on Indian and Alaska Native Affairs is taking testimony on a draft version of the Alaska Native Subsistence Co-Management Demonstration Act of 2014. The bill authorizes state, federal and tribal co-management of wildlife throughout the traditional hunting territory of the Ahtna people. “Alaska Natives have a vested interest in managing a sustainable resource because of our dependence on game as a food source and to preserve our cultures,” Alaska Federation of Natives Co-Chair Tara Sweeney, who will testify at the hearing, said in a press release.
