Voters of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska elected Larry Wright Jr. as chairman on Tuesday.

Wright defeated two other candidates for the post. This will be his third term as chair -- he served in 2006 and in 2008.

“I think I have some leadership skills that can help move the tribe forward and take advantage of some of the opportunities out there," Wright, who will serve for two years, told The Lincoln Journal Star.

Wright succeeds Rebecca White, who was the first woman to lead the tribe. She served two consecutive terms, the limit under the Ponca Constitution. There is no bar on a future, non-consecutive term.
