The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska is working to correct deficiencies at the hospital on the reservation, Chairman John Blackhawk said.

The tribe hopes to avert a loss of Medicare funds due to non-compliance with regulations. The warning came after a patient died last month after being admitted to the Winnebago Hospital.

The hospital "posed an immediate and serious threat to the health and safety of patients,' the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said in a report that was posted by The Sioux City Journal.

The facility could lose funds by June 4.
