Dozens of Indian activists are on trial for participating in protests that turned deadly in 2009.

Alberto Pizango, the president of the indigenous rights group AIDESEP, is among those who are accused of killing police officers during a blockade in June 2009. He insisted he was innocent, the Associated Press reported.

Indian activists blocked a highway for several weeks in protest of development in the Amazon. Peru's Congress rescinded two legislative decrees in response to the unrest.
