Alaska Native health corporation cuts jobs amid budget woes

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation of Alaska is laying off another 110 employees and letting 50 positions go unfilled due to budget woes.

CEO Dan Winkelman blamed sequestration, reduced collections, rising costs and other expenses for a $11.7 million shortfall. Sequestration of the Indiah Health Service budget resulted in a $7 million reduction in funds last year, he said.

"We were projecting a $7.3 million loss by year’s end, which is 13% over budget," Wilkeman said in a statement. "According to our audited financials, budget performance in 2013 was also poor as operations experienced its largest loss in company history, $11.7 million."

Last year, YKHC cut about 50 jobs.
