Homicide rate on Navajo Nation tops some metropolitan areas

The Navajo Nation saw 42 homicides in 2014 according to FBI statistics.

The figure represents an increase from 2012 when 34 people were killed on the reservation. That put the per-capita homicide rate of 18.8 per 100,000 people -- surpassing metropolitan areas like Boston and Seattle, the Associated Press reported.

The FBI investigates between 75 and 100 deaths on the reservation every year, the AP said. From there, the murder cases are determined.
