The
Quileute Nation
of Washington held its 7th annual
Welcoming the Whales
ceremony this morning.
The tribe welcomes
gray whales
as they travel from Baja California, Mexico, to Alaska. An estimated 20,000 to 30,000 pass through tribal waters every spring.
The tribe once hunted whales but stopped after worldwide hunting reduced their numbers.
