House Natural Resources Committee approves Miami Nation bill

The House Natural Resources Committee held a markup session on Wednesday.

By unanimous consent, the committee approved the only Indian measure on the agenda: H.R.4002. The bill allows the Miami Nation to revoke the charter that was approved under the Oklahoma Indian Welfare Act.

The House Subcommittee on Indian and Alaska Native Affairs held a hearing on the bill on March 27. Chief Douglas Lankford explained the need to rescind an outdated document that is almost impossible to change.

The Obama administration supports the bill, Assistant Secretary Kevin Washburn, the head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs said at the hearing. Similar measures have been approved for other tribes in the past.

The measure can now be considered by the full House.
