Tribal and federal authorities are investigating the death of Donald “Dudie” James May, Jr., who was a council member for the Red Lake Nation of Minnesota.

May, 58, was found dead on Saturday. Details are scarce but he apparently had been shot.

“It’s just a devastating loss for our community," Chairman Floyd “Buck” Jourdain Jr., who counted May as a cousin, told The Bemidji Pioneer. "We have a pit in our stomach and a hole in our hearts, that’s the only way to describe it.”

A 47-year-old woman was arrested at the scene. She is facing domestic violence and other charges in tribal court. Federal charges are also possible.
