A public school in southern California is redesigning the logo for its "Arab" mascot after running into controversy.

The current mascot for the Coachella Valley High School features a menacing-looking man with a large nose. The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee is helping come up with a new design that is expected to be unveiled this spring.

Supporters of the mascot say it pays tribute to an "Arab" tradition in the region. But the theme was developed in the late 1940s in an area where fewer than 1 percent of the population is of Arab origin, The New York Times reported.
